BeON Home's Smart Lightbulbs Aim To Out-Smart Intruders

2015-04-24

This year, we've seen a lot of smart bulbs that do one thing—light up. It makes sense, right? However, one company is crossing the streams, making a smart bulb that doubles as a security device..

BeON Home has just announced the BeON Burglar Deterrent. This easy-to-install LED bulb lights up like a normal bulb and even works with your existing wall switches. However, it also has "learning" features, which means it can learn and replay lighting patterns while you're out of the house. That way, it will appear like you're home when you're away from home..

No programming, service contracts or monthly fees are required. It also doesn't have any type of alarm blasting away. Just screw in the bulb, add the modules, and activate the setup through the free mobile app or your wall switch. Not only will the BeON Burglar Deterrent start learning your lighting patterns, but it will also "listen" for things like the doorbell—and illuminate accordingly. Because it has that listening feature, it can also react to a fire alarm, lighting up the house in case of a late-night emergency.

Other features on the bulb include built-in rechargeable batteries in case of a power outage, 800 lumens of soft white LED light output, and night-light features. The module has Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, a microphone, a processor and a rechargeable battery..

BeON Home is launching the BeON Burglar Deterrent on Kickstarter. The early-bird price on the three-bulb package is $199, with six- and nine-unit sets also available in both standard A-lamp and recessed BR30 lamp styles. The campaign will run through December 19, 2014, with BeON Home planning to send out initial shipments in April 2015.

About BeOn:
BeON emerged during a conversation between friends Alexei Erchak and Arvind Baliga in March 2013. Alexei had just purchased a new house and was disappointed with the lack of simple technology options available for managing his new home. Arvind had just returned from vacation and was frustrated by what he had to do for security - programming a timer for a lamp in the center of his living room to make his home look lived-in. He hated that it did not take a lot of smarts to see through it. Arvind had developed concepts for an intelligent burglar deterrent and Alexei had a clear vision for simple, stress–free technology in the home. As their conversation continued they thought they might be onto something and decided to investigate further.

In speaking with security experts, they realized that the entire category of proactive security was being completely overlooked despite being a critical first layer of defense in any complete security system. They had identified a clear problem in the home that they knew they could solve while capturing a new vision for a smart home. They set out to make a security solution that is as simple as screwing in light bulbs.

They now needed a hardware expert to help realize the vision and develop the concepts. So of course they searched on LinkedIn and THE hardware expert in the Boston area was Martin Forest. They met and there was instant chemistry and they now had their team! The three founders agreed to incorporate the company and start development. They have since been joined by Mike Denninger who brought LED lighting expertise and Jack Gundlach who has had a career designing products that delight the end user. www.beonhome.com
